Many penalty limits issued by government agencies are tied to inflation rates. That means that the maximum limits keep rising. Penalties come off the company bottom line – they cannot be deducted as a business expense. Additionally, in this day of intense media scrutiny, negative publicity can hurt the company’s public image. Within two days of a recent plant explosion in Apex, North Carolina, two websites had been created listing all the company’s dirty laundry – past environmental and safety violations, penalties and mishaps. A polar example of an environmentally-compliant company in similar circumstances involved one of RMA’s clients. A very large fire occurred at a chemical facility. The company had previously engaged RMA to assess and remedy spill preparedness and contingency planning at the plant. During the crisis, environmental officials praised the company’s preparedness. RMA has extensive experience in performing third-party compliance audits to provide company management with snapshot views of how the facility is doing in regard to compliance and offering practical solutions. |
