Federal and state legislation and corresponding regulations have resulted in a veritable alphabet soup of acronyms that can be very confusing and intimidating to the un-initiated. What is more, regulatory definitions sometimes have no root in common sense and to assume that certain words mean what they mean in day-to-day language spells disaster in home-made compliance efforts. For example, in EPA regulations, solid waste is not necessarily solid in its physical state. It can be solid, liquid or containerized gas. To assume that all of the solid waste (and by extension hazardous waste) regulations do not apply to liquid wastes would be a major error in application of the regulations. RMA personnel make it their job to stay abreast of regulatory changes in the environmental and safety arenas. |
