Parks & Recreation

Parks & recreational facilities are becoming increasingly popular as community health becomes more important throughout cities and counties. RMA understands the complexities when it comes to planning and designing a park or recreational facility. That’s why we consider the local community, seasons in use, the types of activities, land design, materials, utilities, maintenance, and safety.

Seasonal Parks & Recreation

In most areas’ playgrounds or basketball courts are used year-round and must be efficient, accessible, aesthetically pleasing, durable, easy to maintain, and cost-effective. In contrast, sports fields and pavilions are in use during mild or warm weather. That’s why RMA considers seasonal traffic and weather-related effects for outdoor entertainment.

Location, Location, Location!

RMA helps guarantee longevity and ease of maintenance for your facility.  We consider the materials and location of the land.  For example, wood structures often swell with high humidity in the Southeast. It absorbs extra moisture and makes maintenance on painted structures difficult. In contrast, low humidity areas dry out the wood, which lowers moisture content and causes splits or cracks. Weather variances can also affect adhesives and finishes, which cause a glue joint to fail or bubble/discoloration the paint. Each material has its own limitations, and RMA civil engineers will know what works best in your park.

Parks & Recreation Uses

You must ask yourself, how is the park or recreation center going to be used? After all, there are a variety of factors including:

  • Frequency of Use
  • Types of Events
  • The Age Range for Playground Equipment
  • Estimated Volume of Patrons
  • Foot-Traffic
  • Types of Sports
  • Animal Requirements
  • Event Mix
  • Parking
  • Bench Parks
  • Picnic Tables
  • Parking Facilities
  • Spectator Seating
  • Restroom Facilities
  • Amphitheaters & Performance Spaces
  • ADA Accessibility Concession Stands
  • Grills
  • Public Safety
  • Specific Community Needs

RMA park & recreational civil engineers can help you with concept, design, permitting, bidding, construction, and project completion.

Parks & Recreation Land Design

The site layout and land design considerations are integral parts of each project, including patron access, field layout, landscaping, irrigation, lighting street signs, signage, and access for emergency and maintenance vehicles. The expense of earthwork and environmental considerations can run into millions of dollars. RMA will provide all the pros and cons for your new facility.

Parks & Recreation Utilities

Utility availability is crucial for the functionality of parks & recreational facilities. This includes water faucets, light posts, restrooms, and even Internet access. RMA civil engineers know how to plan for this.

Public Safety

The most important thing for a park or recreational facility is public safety. Each year more than 200,000 kids are treated in hospital ERs for playground-related injuries. Safety equipment includes guardrails, protective barriers, gates, fences, and cushioned surfaces. Safety is one area you can’t afford to take lightly, and RMA will ensure safe structures.
