Water Supply Source Development (Surface Water)

The volume of water withdrawn from surface water sources is closely regulated in the United States and limited by jurisdiction. Unfortunately, you will not know how much source water can be withdrawn until you file for a permit with the regional Environmental Protection Division. As part of this taxing process, Water Conservation Plans, Drought Contingency Plans, and certain water system data are required. This process applies to new and current water system applicants for permit renewals or expansions.

Groundwater Wells

Wells have been an excellent source of water for nearly 8,000 years. However, there are many things to consider when drilling a well. Shallow wells are more likely to receive contaminants from the surface, and they are also more likely to be under the influence of surface water. Deeper wells are less likely to have pollutants if they are appropriately cased, grouted, and are fed by deeper aquifers. Therefore, all wells must clear the hurdle of good water chemistry. Also, while a well may be free of pollutants, it may contain high concentrations of iron, manganese, sulfur, or other inorganic elements that could reduce the value or completely negate the use of the well for a drinking water supply.

Rindt-McDuff Associates can help you determine the quantity and quality of available groundwater in your area. Our hydro-geologist  assesses the developing groundwater in your area for sufficient quantity and quality to meet your objectives. After receiving permission to drill test wells, we drill for water quantity and quality data. If the test wells are satisfactory, RMA assists the water system owner with design plans and specifications. These plans typically include the construction, well treatment building, chemical feed equipment, valves, piping, and pumping equipment to deliver water into the system. Our groundwater services include:

Drinking Water Treatment Facilities

There are many things to consider in designing a treatment facility. The most crucial factor is the quality and quantity of the raw water to be treated. Surface water quality can change considerably in a relatively short time. In addition, seasonal factors and rainfall can significantly impact the quality of the raw water transported into the treatment plant. That’s why the water treatment plant must be capable of adjusting to rapid changes.

Treatment and filtration basins, chemical treatment methods, and pumping equipment must be carefully designed for variable raw water quality. For this reason, the plant must also be designed to minimize operational and maintenance costs while also adapting to changing water chemistry. Drinking Water Lines

Drinking Water System Modeling

Rindt-McDuff Associates creates water models to attain specific data about your system. System data such as flow capacity, operating pressures, or residual pressures can help determine project improvement locations. Further, the model can show if there are low water pressures or fire flows from hydrants. Our engineers can determine if the changes are viable if you add a water tank or new residential development to your water system. We can also identify areas of weakness if a more prominent water consumption client intends to tie into the system. 

Booster Pump Stations 

Booster pump stations are placed at higher elevations within a water system where the water system pressure is low. It helps supply water during regular or high-demand periods. We gather elevation, water main size, demand, and system pressures data with system modeling or system data.  This data allows us to locate booster pump stations within the system. As a result, we can help stations avoid expensive system modifications such as extending and looping water mains or adding water storage tanks. 

Rindt-McDuff Associates has been designing booster pump stations since 1980. As part of a booster pump station project, RMA can gather sufficient system data, design the improvements, and provide construction oversight. An essential part of the design is pump sizing, power supply, SCADA, and electrical controls.

Water Storage Tanks

The distribution system must store and supply high quantities of potable water at sufficient pressures, to meet demands. Water storage tank’s design and location depend on the system demand, water main sizes, pressures within the distribution system, the tank’s elevation, and surrounding water system.

Rindt-McDuff Associates designs, permits, and manages the construction of water storage tanks for high volumes of potable water.
